Official Mascot of 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa

So what can we tell about him? One thing is for sure, Zakumi will be first on the dancefloor and last off it at the biggest party in the world - the FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010. He wants to dance and entertain as many people as he can. He is an animator for fans, players and officials, for schoolchildren, teenagers and those young at heart!

He is extremely proud to be the Official Mascot and determined to be the best host for everyone visiting his beloved country. He symbolizes South Africa and the rest of the African continent through his self-confidence, pride, hospitality, social skills and warm-heartedness.

Zakumi is a jolly, self-confident, adventurous, spontaneous, and actually quite shrewd little fellow. He loves to perform and always follows his instinct and intuition, yet sometimes has the tendency to exaggerate a bit. You will often find him fooling about and teasing people but not in a mean way. He is caring, and wants to make as many friends as possible.

He loves to play football as it is a great way to connect with others and break down language barriers. He always carries his football around which he will use to invite people to play with him.

Zakumi loves football. At one time he decided to dye his hair green as he felt it would be the perfect camouflage against the green of the football pitch; a bit like his rosette spots are when hunting in the wilderness!

He does have one striking weakness. With all his energy, he needs frequent rests. Occasionally, in-between performances on stage, he may suddenly fall asleep on the spot at the most random times! But rest assured, these are only short breaks that a leopard of his calibre needs to recharge his batteries.

Over the last years he has travelled the whole of Africa where the leopard habitat is good (pretty much everywhere from open savannahs, forests, jungles to mountainous areas, even deserts). He has therefore learned to adapt to new environments; enjoying the diversity in nature and people across the African continent

The name ‘Zakumi' is a composition of ‘ZA' standing for South Africa and ‘kumi', which translates into ‘10' in various languages across Africa.

Zakumi's main priority is to turn the FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010 into one huge, joyful and unforgettable party and show the thousands of international guests the warmth and spirit of the African continent.

"He wants to create a good mood for the fans and raise the excitement for the FIFA World Cup 2010, the first on African soil. He is a proud South African and wants to ensure that the world will come together in South Africa," explained Lucas Radebe, South Africa's football icon and close friend of Zakumi.

Who will win FIFA Confederation Cup 2009?

HYS - Who will win the Confed Cup?

Eight teams; one trophy. Everybody wants to know whether you think Brazil, Egypt, Iraq, Italy, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain or USA will win this year's FIFA Confederations Cup 2009?

Courtesy of their UEFA EURO 2008 conquest, the 32-game unbeaten run they will take into their curtain-raiser and the presence in their squad of Iker Casillas, David Villa and Fernando Torres, Spain will start as the marginal favourites.

However, they face stern competition from Brazil and Italy. A Seleção will enter the tournament as its holders and, thanks to Julio Cesar, Robinho and Kaka, in a rich vein of form. For their part, I Azzurri are the reigning world champions and boast players of the calibre of Gianluigi Buffon, Daniele De Rossi and Andrea Pirlo.

The hosts have won two of the last five FIFA Confederations Cups, and Teko Modise and Steven Pienaar will be out to help South Africa emulate Mexico and France. Meanwhile, Egypt, Iraq, New Zealand and USA will charge Mohamed Aboutrika, Younis Mahmoud, Shane Smeltz and Landon Donovan respectively with inspiring them all the way.

So, it's over to you: who will win this year's FIFA Confederations Cup 2009?And it's up to the playing teams to do their Best to defend and win the title.

Squads Revealed for South Africa 2009

USA announced their squad for the FIFA Confederations Cup South Africa 2009 last June 8, meaning that all eight participating nations have now confirmed their rosters for the quadrennial tournament.

Every confederation is represented at the 'Festival of Champions', with the six respective continental champions joined by FIFA World Cup™ champions Italy, together with host nation South Africa. Among the 184 players selected are some world's finest footballers, all of whom have already demonstrated their quality on some of the game's greatest stages. Now, after much anticipation and exctiement, the moment of truth is finally upon us.

The famous names
Reigning FIFA Confederations Cup champions Brazil return as South American champions boasting an array of attacking talent, with Robinho and former FIFA World Player of the Year Kaka arguably the star attractions. Attempting to halt their progress in Group B will be world champions Italy, for whom captain Fabio Cannavaro will again be a key man behind the playmaker supreme that is Andrea Pirlo. USA and Egypt, meanwhile, will look to their respective talismans in Landon Donovan and the much-beloved Mohamed Aboutrika.

European champions Spain possess an all-star midfield crowned by Xavi and Cesc Fabregas, who in Andres Iniesta's absence will shoulder the responsibility of providing ammunition for the lethal Fernando Torres-David Villa double act. Host nation South Africa will lean on in-form midfield maestro Steven Pienaar, while Iraq can call on a genuine star of the Asian stage in Nashat Akram. Completing the group is New Zealand, for whom striker Shane Smeltz has been in a rich vein of scoring form both domestically and internationally over the last couple of years.

The FIFA Confederations Cup South Africa 2009 will undoubtedly witness some of the world's greats displaying their awesome talent, not to mention providing a glimpse of some exciting up-and-coming international stars. It promises to be a tasty treat for supporters across the globe and will surely whet the appetite ahead of next year's FIFA World Cup.

Cristiano Ronaldo on Real Madrid (The Deal of the Century)

Manchester United have finally caved in to Real Madrid's repeated attempts to lure Cristiano Ronaldo away from Old Trafford.

United confirmed Thursday morning they had accepted an £80million bid for the world player of the year, with a world-record deal expected to go through by June 30.

The news had been expected when Madrid stated talks were under way, and now it is only a matter of finalizing the player's personal terms before he completes a dream move to the Bernabeu.

Madrid president Florentino Perez had already vowed to do "everything possible" to sign the 24-year-old and, unlike 12 months ago, Sir Alex Ferguson did not even attempt to talk Ronaldo out of it, knowing the former Sporting Lisbon player had his heart set on a move.

A United statement read: "At the request of Cristiano Ronaldo -- who has again expressed his desire to leave -- and after discussion with the player's representatives, United have agreed to give Real Madrid permission to talk to the player.

"Matters are expected to be concluded by 30 June. The club will not comment until further notice."

The news is bound to be greeted with some skepticism by United fans, who have repeatedly been told no deal had been agreed for the sale of FIFA's World Player of the Year in the face of regular statements from Spain that the Portuguese international was bound for the Bernabeu.

As it now seems a matter of when, rather than if, a world-record transfer will be completed, Ferguson might wish to explain why he has gone back on his famous comment in December last year that he would not "sell that mob a virus".

It is the first time for many years United will have allowed a player to leave they were not happy about losing. Yet some supporters may be pleased that at least another drawn-out transfer saga, such as the one 12 months ago, is not played out in public.

And at least the money could be reinvested in a squad that almost, but not quite, proved good enough to win back-to-back Champions League trophies, in addition to a hat-trick of Premier League titles.

With Edwin van der Sar, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville all reaching the end of their careers, it promises to be a far more testing summer than Ferguson might have realized.

And, for all the petulance and pouting for which Ronaldo is so famed, filling the void created by the loss of his immense talent may prove difficult.

Madrid confirmed the news in a brief statement on their website, www.realmadrid.com, adding that they hoped to finalise matters as soon as possible: "Real Madrid confirm they have made an offer to Manchester United for the acquisition of the rights of the player Cristiano Ronaldo. The club hope to reach an agreement with the player in the next few days."
